Brief Biography

New Jersey author Anthony Buccino published sixteen books including four essay collections, three military history books and seven full-length poetry collections.  He has been called ' “New Jersey’s ‘Garrison Keillor” or something to that effect.’ 'Don the TV man...' and other columns on Patch earned a SPJ-NJ Excellence in Journalism award. His transit blog on NJ.com earned a SPJ-NJ Excellence in Journalism award. His poem At The Vet is nominated for the Pushcart Prize.


BIOGRAPHY - Anthony Buccino

Anthony BuccinoWriter, editor, poet Anthony Buccino writes with clarity and humor in his verse and columns about growing up in the second half of the 20th Century. He has been called “New Jersey’s ‘Garrison Keillor’ ” or something to that effect.’

Born in Belleville, the Nutley, N.J., resident published four essay collections, seven poetry collections and three local military history books.

Buccino spent 12 years editing business news copy at Dow Jones & Co. for the Ticker, NewsPlus and The Wall Street Journal professional web pages. He has written about life and growing up in northern New Jersey on Patch.com and has contributed to NJ Voices. For five years he wrote about commuting and transit in metro New York-New Jersey. Buccino is an associate editor at TheStreet.com, RealMoney.com and RealMoneyPro.com.

He continues work on essays and verse about growing up - and growing older - in Belleville, Nutley and northern New Jersey.

Buccino's Essay Collections

Buccino's essay collections about life and growing up in northern New Jersey in the second half of the 20th Century are  Rambling Round - Inside and Outside at the Same Time, A Father's Place, An Eclectic Collection, and Sister Dressed Me Funny. His latest collection is Greetings From Belleville, New Jersey.

Buccino's Poetry

The poetry editors for U.S. 1 Worksheets, Betty Lies, Linda Arntzenius and Wanda Praisner nominated Anthony Buccino's poem At The Vet for the national Pushcart Prize.

His poem Jersey Geese earned Honorable Mention in the 2011 Allen Ginsberg Awards. His poem Something Tells Me You Went To Catholic School earned Honorable Mention in the 2010 Allen Ginsberg Awards. His poem Ten Minutes earned Honorable Mention in the 2009 Allen Ginsberg Awards. Hands In Socks was named Editor’s Choice in the 2008 Allen Ginsberg Awards.

Sometimes I Swear In Italian was published in 2011.

Buccino published four distinct collections in 2010: Yountakah Country -  a Poetic View of Nutley Old and New, CANNED booted, bumped, down-sized, fired, forced out, hated, hired, jobless, laid off, let go, out of work, out-sourced, pink-slipped, terminated, sacked, unemployed , Sixteen Inches On Center, and Retrieving Labrador Days - dog tales in prose and verse. 

American Boy - Pushing Sixty was published in 2009.

He published two collections in 2008. Voices on the Bus, Train, Subway, and in My Head are poems written while commuting from northeastern Essex County to Jersey City, N.J. One Morning in Jersey City are poems written in and around Jersey City and sitting along the Hudson River, often at lunch time despite the collection's title.  

He published a volume of poetry, Days You Knew Me in 1976.

Buccino's War Biography Books

The Nutley Sons and Belleville Sons honor roll projects are serious writing about a serious subject. With his daughter Andrea, two paperbacks were published based on the research about the men from Nutley, N.J., and Belleville, N.J., who died in service to their country. In 2011, he published Belleville and Nutley in the Civil War, a Brief History.

In May 2005, a new memorial to nine men who died in peacetime was dedicated in Nutley - based on the research in Nutley Sons Honor Roll.

In November 2005, more than 150 names were added to the Belleville memorial on Union Avenue, after having the blank slate for 50 years awaiting the list of names which was based on the research in Belleville Sons Honor Roll.

In 2006, six street names in a new residential development City Homes At Essex Park in Belleville, N.J., were renamed to honor veterans and four of the Belleville heroes who died while in service.

Buccino was named the recipient of the UNICO National 2005 Grand Order Filippo Mazzei William Paca Americanism Award.

In 2001, Buccino received the Mille Grazie Award for his work with the Italian American One Voice Coalition against negative stereotyping in the media.

Professional History

Buccino won the a New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists 2011 EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM, Media Affiliated Blog award for his Belleville posts on Patch.

From 1999 to 2011, Buccino edited business news copy at Dow Jones & Co. for the Ticker, NewsPlus and The Wall Street Journal professional web pages.

From 1996 to 1998, he was managing editor at Worrall Community Newspapers where he oversaw the Nutley Journal, The Belleville Post, The Independent Press of Bloomfield and The Glen Ridge Paper.

In 1997, Buccino won a New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists  award for editorial writing.

From 1989 to 1990, he was editor of The Belleville Times.

In the 1970s Buccino wrote reviews and essays for area newspapers including The Belleville Times, Belleville, N.J., and The Independent Press of Bloomfield, New Jersey.

Buccino has been published in New Jersey Monthly, the Wall Street Journal, the Passaic Herald News, New Jersey Federated Sportsmen, Italian Tribune, Behind The Lines and other publications.

He served as editor at New Jersey Motor Truck Association, a state trade association, Beauty & Barber Supply Institute, a national trade association, and of Modern Food Service Magazine, a regional magazine.

He is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, New Jersey Chapter.

The author attended Montclair State College where he majored in English with a journalism minor. Buccino is a business news editor in the New York City area. 

Buccino created and maintains web sites for the Nutley Historical Society, The Van Riper Restoration Trust and The Kingsland Manor, all in Nutley.
